Opening Session

As the house applauds the senate into their chambers, the 1st Session of the 55th Legislature of 2023 officially begins. Those who have multiple stars welcome the new zero stars to the session. Many new faces throughout the chambers fill leadership positions and practice the roles they will be playing as the session continues. To start off the session, Governor Shaw gives inspiration and advice for the upcoming session.

“Vote as if you are speaking for those who do not have a voice,” Governor Shaw said.

Governor Shaw’s words carry weight as he reflects on his own zero-star days and advises the newcomers to be competitive, even though the session may seem overwhelming. He believes that delegates can get the most out of the session by having a “bring it on” attitude. Shaw’s encouragement serves as a reminder that every delegate has the potential to make a difference in their constituents’ lives.

Following Governor Shaw’s impactful speech, Vice Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, Dustin Rowe, delivers a thought-provoking address. He begins by asking the delegation, “What can you do in your life to make Oklahoma a better state?” Vice Chief Justice Rowe emphasizes that one does not have to be in legislation to contribute to the betterment of Oklahoma. He shares his inspiring story of retiring by age 20 through hard work and integrity.

In his speech, Vice Chief Justice Rowe encourages the audience never to stop learning, stating, “The more I learn, the more I realize I do not know.” Vice Chief Justice Rowe said. He urges people to be better listeners, to think critically, and to study. He emphasizes the importance of independent thinking and urges individuals to aspire to think outside the box and draw their own conclusions.

The speeches by Governor Shaw and Vice Chief Justice Rowe set an inspiring tone for the upcoming session. Their words serve as a reminder of the responsibility and privilege that comes with being a delegate and the impact each and every one of them can make in shaping the future of Oklahoma. The delegates are filled with anticipation and motivation as they prepare to embark on this important legislative journey.

OIL encounters many challenges, including leadership dropouts, room changes, and behind-the-scenes hotel chaos; however, the community grows stronger together. The house deals with a location change from the house chambers to the Senate assembly room, which is significantly smaller.

“A challenge this year may be the space we are in. Though we are very privileged to be here, the space is limited. It may be difficult to hear and interact with others in this space,” Avery Mclntyre said in response to a question regarding this session’s potential challenges. Students are still eager to start the fall 2023 session despite various changes. House delegate Nathan Wilson states, “I am excited to meet new people and make connections,” Wilson said.
