The P.A.V.E. Act (OSU-008): Harnessing Social Security for Efficient Absentee Voting

By Journalist Josiah Belie (ORU)

One of our greatest strengths as a republic is that of the electoral system and its ability to evolve with the times, ensuring accessibility and security for all citizens. The “Pursuing Absentee Voting Enhancements (P.A.V.E.) Act of 2023,” championed by Senator Minton, exemplifies a forward-thinking approach by incorporating Social Security requirements, presenting an efficient and effective solution to streamline the absentee voting process in Oklahoma.

At its core, the P.A.V.E. Act provides the recognition that leveraging Social Security requirements can serve as a powerful tool to enhance the efficiency of the absentee voting system. By mandating the inclusion of crucial information such as name, birth date, and identification number, the legislation aligns with the existing Social Security infrastructure, creating a seamless integration that benefits both voters and election administrators.

One of the key strengths of using Social Security requirements is the inherent accuracy and reliability of the data associated with each citizen. Social Security numbers are unique identifiers, linked directly to an individual’s personal information. By requiring voters to provide this information when applying for an absentee ballot, the P.A.V.E. Act ensures a direct match with the voter registration record, significantly reducing the likelihood of errors or discrepancies.

The Act’s emphasis on electronic communication for ballot requests, coupled with the inclusion of Social Security requirements, enhances the security of the process without sacrificing convenience. This combination not only safeguards against potential fraudulent activities but also aligns with the contemporary trend of digitization, making it easier for citizens to engage with the electoral system in a modern and accessible way.

Moreover, the Act’s provision for voters to confirm their address before submitting an application for an absentee ballot through electronic means is a testament to the efficiency that Social Security requirements can bring to the process. With additional amendments by the Honorable Senate, not only does the P.A.V. E. Act ensure the accuracy of voter information, but also facilitates a real-time verification process, minimizing delays and errors associated with traditional methods.
