OKLAHOMA CITY, OK- The kick-off of the 50th-second session joint session of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislatures began with the Speaker commanding obedience/silence in the House Chamber. The House chamber was packed with laughter, excitement and just a hint of the pastoral Senators in the sea of House delegates at the joint session. A prompt introduction of the respected leadership are in ordered whilst the traditional game of “have-you-seen-the-Governor??” follows as more delegates filed in the House Chamber. This will be the first session for the new O.I.L Madame Governor, Gabrielle Hosek, to take charge.
Madame Governor, Gabrielle Hosek, started her first official session as the new Governor with a point of encouragement towards something in O.I.L that can change the image of the organization as a whole. Changes can often be hard for many to accept; however, the promising new Madame Governor fully embraces those change and launched the first joint session in a new era that sheds new light into the importance of having diversity in the chambers. “I think it’s imperative that O.I.L be diverse as much as possible” (Hosek). This new change of perspective, coming from a state that bleeds red looks promising for the future of O.I.L. Madame Governor also stated that she “believed diversity in representation and policy making is very important.” She also believe that is imperative for the body “to hear different perspectives from what we normally get.” Madame Governor also brought forth a familiar face to O.I.L to provide a relatable perspective to reach across the aisle. She informed this reporter that “for Dorman, he’s just an integral part of O.I.L and given his bipartisan relations he has a fresh perspective on what it means to respectfully work with your colleagues across the aisle to accomplish policy goals.”
Not much can be said that is not included in the Governor’s statement to the body. The issue about diversity in a state that bleeds red is that it is located on the top-self of the cabinet that is difficult to reach for, however, not impossible. If the body of O.I.L all lend a hand and lift one another up, it can be obtainable. The question of the day is who will be the first to step up and reach out.
