OU-507, authored by OU Rep. Yanchick was passed by both the house and senate chambers. The intent of this bill was to incentivize young people to reconnect to their tribal ancestry, get an education, and potentially stay in Oklahoma long term. Yanchick stated that this bill was passed at a good time since it is Native American Heritage month.

Rep. Roberts felt that if this bill was signed by Governor Barnett it would ensure that native delegates would feel safe in OIL. In addition, it could help recruit more native delegates to the organization.

Historically, there have been many pieces of legislation that have enacted forced assimilation, dislocation, and disconnection from tribal land and culture. While there is no single solution bill, Yanchick hopes that this bill can help lead our state towards a more equitable future.
