As the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature (OIL) session draws to a close, it’s hard not to reflect on the incredible experience of being part of this dynamic, high-energy mock-government competition.
Over the past few days, students from colleges and universities across the state have come together to debate, draft legislation and engage in some of the most thought-provoking discussions on issues ranging from education to sustainability. Whether you were in the middle of heated debates or watching from the sidelines, it was clear that OIL is more than just a competition — it’s an opportunity for personal growth, collaboration and the kind of spirited engagement that makes democracy thrive.
From the moment the session began, the atmosphere was electric. The halls of the Oklahoma Capitol building were buzzing with excitement as participants prepared to present their bills, argue their points and negotiate with their peers.
For many, this is their first exposure to the world of state government and legislative processes, and it’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression. It’s not every day you get to see college students standing in front of their peers, passionately advocating for their beliefs while learning the art of persuasion and compromise.
One of the most striking aspects of OIL is the dedication and hard work that goes into each bill and each debate. For those of us who were fortunate enough to witness it, it was inspiring to watch students tackle complex issues and craft thoughtful, well-researched legislation.
Whether it was a bill aimed at increasing funding for higher education or one focused on environmental conservation, the level of preparation and thoughtfulness behind each proposal was impressive. It was clear the participants were not just there to “win” the competition — they were there to make a difference and engage with real-world issues in a meaningful way.
But it wasn’t all just about serious debates and formal presentations. OIL also has its moments of lighthearted fun, and those moments proved to be just as valuable as the more intense discussions.
From unexpected dance-offs to humorous debates on bizarre bills (like one advocating for the eradication of geese), these moments added a sense of camaraderie and levity that helped to break up the intensity of the competition. These “let loose” moments reminded everyone that, while the issues being debated were important, the friendships formed and the shared experience of participating in OIL were just as valuable.
As we reach the final day of the session, it’s evident that OIL has been more than just a competition — it’s been a place where young leaders have honed their skills in leadership, communication and teamwork. It’s a place where students from different backgrounds and colleges have come together to engage in the democratic process, challenge one another, and, in the end, grow as individuals and as future leaders.
Being a part of OIL has been an incredible privilege, and it’s been an experience that I will carry with me for years to come. The energy, the passion and the dedication displayed by everyone involved have been truly inspiring, and it’s clear that the next generation of leaders is ready to take on the challenges ahead.
As the session comes to a close, I’m grateful for the opportunity to document this vibrant, engaging and thought-provoking competition. And, for everyone who participated, I have no doubt that this experience will have a lasting impact on your future endeavors—whether in politics, policy or any other field you choose to pursue.
