OIL is officially at the halfway point, and delegates have some thoughts about how session has gone so far.
During the first session of the 55 legislature, delegates have seen bills, bed bugs and galas. There is no question that delegates have been busy, and a few of them are sharing their thoughts on bills and events that have happened so far.
Fischer Standridge (SE) said he thinks that even with ups and downs, session has lived up to the hype.
“It’s been a little messy, but so far with everyone I’ve talked to that’s pretty much to be expected,” Standridge (SE) said.
“So far it’s been really, really fun and energetic and I’ve really been enjoying my time so far.”
On Thursday, the House of Representatives heard nine bills, with seven passing and one failing. On the senate side, things have been moving a bit slower, but that isn’t getting the zero stars discouraged.
Senator Jazmin Ponce (SNU) said even though this is her first time here, she is excited to see everything that is taking place.
“Session has been really awesome so far,” Ponce (SNU) said.
“Something that is super interesting for me to see is the amount of questions people have, because they are questions that I’ve never even thought of. And just the amount of caucusing people do, I was definitely not expecting people to do that much.”
The house and senate aren’t the only ones busy this session. Mooters have been hard at work preparing for moot court rounds and making sure they are prepped for the case this year.
Mooter and part-time representative Kristyn Fields (OSU) said that she feels like session has gone by quickly, but said she still feels like she has been here for more than two days.
“I can’t believe we’re already halfway through session,” Fields (OSU) said.
“I feel like we’ve been here forever but I also feel like we just got here.”
Fields (OSU) also talked about her day yesterday, and how she’s feeling about her upcoming round later this afternoon.
“I don’t go [to moot round] until 5:00 today, so I’m planning on prepping all day,” Fields (OSU) said.
“I hope I really have a good time, and can get everything out of OIL that I possibly can, and continue to make friendships the rest of this week.”
