Day One of Session in Review

By Journalist Lauren Sherrer (OU).

The second session of the 54th Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature has begun. Commencing on Wednesday, March 29, delegates from universities across the state of Oklahoma have gathered in Oklahoma City. Over the course of the next five days, delegates will pass legislation, compete in moot court, press competitions and connect with students from other delegations.

Session was officially in motion once the joint session, held in the house chambers, started. Delegates from all branches of O.I.L. listened to addresses from current O.I.L. Governor Emmett Thompson and Oklahoma State Representative and O.I.L. Alum Trey Caldwell. Governor Thompson highlighted the growth in the organization, which is up by 12%. Representative Caldwell spoke about his time as a delegate and encouraged members to stay involved and advocate within their communities.

Nominations for governor and lieutenant governor were made and accepted during the joint session. The nominees for Governor are Evan Shaw (ALU) and Amanda McCumber (OU). During their acceptance speeches, both candidates expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for their nominations and their time in the organization. The candidates also detailed their platforms, with Shaw’s being focused on communication, resources and growth. McCumber’s main platform points are transparency, community and growth. Senate Deputy President Pro Tempore Alaura Gilmore (SE) was the sole nominee for the position of lieutenant governor. When accepting her nomination, she spoke of her goals to encourage transparency in communication and dedicate resources to aid small delegations. Gilmore was sworn in during the joint session.

Day one of session concluded with a forum for candidates seeking offices in the executive office, house of representatives, and senate. Held at the hotel beginning at 9:30 Wednesday night, the forum gave candidates an opportunity to answer questions prepared by members of the press corps. Pizza was served and delegates attended to learn more about the goals and perspectives of the candidates.

With a successful day one in the books, the members of the 54th Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature look forward to what the rest of session will bring.
