Delegates traveled from across the state today to convene for the 53rd session of Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature. There was much excitement about being back in person, even if it could not be held at the state capitol. The Stone Room of the Stoney Creek Hotel in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma transformed into the House chamber for the week.
As members of the House waited for the other OIL delegates to enter the chamber for Joint Session, a silent anticipation fell over the room. Dad jokes and recognition of a twenty-first birthday broke the ice in the chamber. Soon enough, the other members had arrived and the first session was in full swing.
There were a few hiccups with the script, but the laughter that resulted was a great example of the joy of being at an in-person session. Delegates with higher star counts explained traditions to zero stars. The sense of community within OIL was felt even more when Governor Barnett gave his opening remarks. Barnett recognized what an accomplishment the previous zoom session was. He encouraged the delegates, stating that the pandemic was “not the first time Oklahoma or this organization have taken a massive hit.” He recognized the strength and resiliency it took to overcome this.
OIL problem-solving was further demonstrated tonight when the weather created difficulties. Senator Carri Hicks was the guest speaker for Joint Session, but a hail storm kept her from making it to Tulsa. However, this did not stop OIL delegates from hearing the words she prepared for the event. Senator Hicks zoomed into the session. It did not matter that the sound system was not working. Holding a microphone up to the laptop was all that it took to give the senator the chance to share her wisdom and encouragement.
All in all, Joint Session was a success. This is sure to be an indicator of the great things ahead in the coming days.
