Members come together to welcome everyone at the opening joint session.

The Fifty-Fifth Session of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature (OIL) kicked off at the Oklahoma State Capitol, with an incredible energy filling the room as delegates from universities across the state gathered.

Each delegation brought its own unique enthusiasm to the opening joint session, setting the tone for what promises to be a week of intense collaboration, debate and legislative simulation.

One delegate, a two-star representative from Southern Nazarene University, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to learn from peers with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

“I’m most excited to learn from each other,” she said, noting the valuable perspectives that come from interacting with delegates from different backgrounds.

This sense of learning and growth is a key theme throughout the session. By stating this, the delegate emphasized that by exchanging perspectives, not only would they improve the quality of the legislation being proposed, but they would also develop a deeper understanding of the state’s various communities and the challenges they face.

The individuals who worked extremely hard to craft these bills will finally have the opportunity to present them. The competition is also becoming a rich environment for furthering skills that go beyond simply passing legislation. Delegates are learning how to negotiate, communicate and think critically about complex issues. The OIL experience provides a valuable platform for students to engage directly in the legislative process while also gaining practical skills that will benefit them in their careers, regardless of whether they pursue a future in politics.

Also, many delegates view the rare event as an opportunity to build leadership abilities, gain insight into government operations, and form lasting relationships with peers who share similar interests. For many students, the friendships and networks they build through OIL can be just as important as the legislative experience and knowledge obtained itself.

As the week progresses, those getting to participate hope to witness the energy in the room, with delegates preparing for a series of debates, discussions and legislative challenges. The intensity of the debates and bills being presented ensures the passion behind them. The Fifty-Fifth Session of OIL will be one for the books and an incredible experience for all those engaged in the competitions.
