The spring session of the 55th Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature is halfway done, and representatives have presented, debated and deliberated on bills that discuss some of the most important issues facing our country.
Representatives are reflecting on their achievements, keeping stock of their progress and strategizing for the remainder of session. Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature provides a unique platform for college delegates from across Oklahoma to engage in legislative debate, advocacy and leadership development.
One of the most striking aspects of OIL is the diversity of perspectives represented within its chambers. Delegates come from all different colleges, walks of life, beliefs and backgrounds. One of these delegates is Sen. Madison Resendiz (OU). As a zero star, she was enthusiastic about what OIL offers and how much development it brings to young leaders.
“It’s very overwhelming, but I am also having a really good time; it’s overwhelming in a good way,” Sen. Resendiz (OU) said.
When asked about what she was expecting from session, Sen. Resendiz (OU) wasn’t sure what was going to happen, but she knew she couldn’t wait to get started.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Sen. Resendiz (OU) said. “Obviously, we talked about it in our delegation before coming to session, but it just has an important feeling to it.”
Other delegates had different insights into session this semester, possibly because of their previous experience within OIL, such as Sen. Lindsey Smith (OSU).
When asked about her favorite parts of session, she explained that it’s “making new friends. I think every time I come here, you really get to meet up with somebody new, and now I’m in a couple of leadership positions and getting closer with them, going to meetings with them has probably been my favorite part of session.”
OIL not only gives delegates professional opportunities, but also offers them invaluable opportunities to build relationships and hone essential skills.
Delegates are looking ahead to the rest of session with a sense of purpose and determination. They are setting ambitious goals, seeking to advance key initiatives and will leave the Capitol with a renewed sense of commitment and servant leadership.
