Delegates, leaders, and participants in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature are bidding farewell to each other as the session comes to a close. It is a time of mixed emotions, with sorrow and excitement for what lies ahead. Both new and experienced delegates are constantly learning and are eager to bring their newfound knowledge back in the next session.
Carlos Vazquez, a zero-star delegate from ORU, shares his experiences and aspirations, ” We had fun and created a positive atmosphere by not taking ourselves too seriously all the time. Despite the seriousness of the issues we tackled, I found it challenging to hold my tongue at times. Furthermore, getting involved and staying engaged when fatigue sets in can be quite daunting. Nevertheless, it has been a remarkable journey, and I have learned to appreciate the significance of the legislative process,” Vazquez said.
Faith Gregory began her journey with OIL during her freshman year of college with the OBU delegation. Then, in her sophomore year, made a decision to switch to SWOSU, bringing her own delegation into the fold. She is making remarkable waves in this incredible organization. She shares her experience this session, “I have built countless friendships during this session. Everyone I met was intelligent, passionate, and open-minded. This entire experience has been a testament to the power of unity and collaboration. I am immensely grateful to be surrounded by such incredible individuals,” Gregory said.
Zero star, Kath Elbow from OU shares that there were moments when she held strong opinions on certain bills, “However, through engaging in caucus discussions with my peers, I discovered the importance of listening and considering alternative perspectives. It has opened my mind and made me more willing to change my opinions based on a thorough understanding of the issues at hand,” Elbow said.
Jacob explains his tremendous personal growth over the years, “ When I first arrived, I was reserved and quiet, but now I boldly speak up. I fearlessly question the status quo, even if it means being perceived as the ‘bad guy.’ My purpose is to provide others with the opportunity to express their thoughts, to debate, and to challenge the norms,”
Elbow acknowledges the exceptional support given by the leadership team, “The leadership team has been phenomenal. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that all delegates, irrespective of their experience level, feel supported and empowered. Their dedication and guidance have made this journey enjoyable and less daunting, especially during times when we make mistakes. They have truly been a source of inspiration for us all, “Elbow said.
Vazquez acknowledges the impact of the leadership team on zero-star delegates, “The leadership team has played a pivotal role in ensuring that zero-star delegates feel empowered and supported. They have been exceptionally understanding when we make mistakes and have become a reliable source of guidance and inspiration,” Vazquez said.
When asked about his future goals, Vazquez expresses his desire to assist his fellow delegates, especially those who were once in his position. He hopes to contribute to the moot court program, sharing his invaluable experiences to help his school and delegation prepare for future sessions.
Riplet recognizes the outstanding camaraderie among the delegates. Everyone, including zero-stars, is willing to help and advocate for each other, creating an environment of mutual growth and support.
This session has been an incredible journey of growth, learning, and camaraderie. These passionate and dedicated delegates have left an indelible mark on the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature. They stand as shining examples of what can be achieved through unity, courage, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. As they return to their schools and communities, they carry with them the invaluable lessons learned and the inspiration to continue their impact. The future looks bright with these exceptional individuals at the helm.
