5 survival guide tips for O.I.L. zero stars

By: Journalist Hayden Grubbs (OU)

Zero stars make many mistakes when it comes to the intricacies of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature.

Even on the 56th session, that’s OK!

Helping zero stars avoid and correct these mistakes can easily be done; with the help of the five lessons, tricks and tips gathered here.

  1. Face this wonderful view from the correct parking spot

Parking is one of the biggest horrors that is ever present in adult life. From the fear of finding a spot to the fret of being towed. This can easily be avoided by understanding every O.I.L. member belongs in the visitor lot. Despite this place being home for the next five days, your car must be marked as a visitor.

  1. Review bill packet

Reviewing the bill packet can be anywhere from reviewing every word of every bill, or reviewing can be looking at the titles for a fast refresher. Having some sort of idea of the bills that will be presented can help you in more ways than one (learning the titles, authors, etc).

  1. Meet your freshman liaison

Your freshman liaison is one of the nicest people you can ever meet (whether that’s because they have to be nice or not). They have a plethora of knowledge ready to share the young eager minds.

  1. Dress-up days

The Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature can be treated seriously, but sometimes it’s OK to have fun, too! The dress-up days encourage self expression and fun through the lens of personal fashion.

  1. Make connections

If you’re a zero star, you can just start with your delegation, or expand beyond it. Ask about them personally or ask who they know. Those at O.I.L. could be your future coworkers and bosses.

  1. (BONUS) Interview if you’re press

Bonus if you are a press competitor, the role comes with the built-in ice breaker of asking for interviews. It’s even fun to do non-professional interviews to learn more about someone.
